In the 1940s, Dr. Walter J. Freeman began prescribing, in widespread fashion, a cure for homosexuality. He "cured," to an arguable degree of success, mostly institutionalized patients. By 1955, more than 19,000 American "deviants" had received this treatment. What was the "cure"? A lobotomy.
