Sleeping Under the Stars
By Lisa Archer
Take a look inside the world of gay porn.

In Sleeping Under the Stars, actor and director Geoffrey Karen Dior chronicles his raunchy exploits with more than a hundred porn stars, including some of the biggest names (and schlongs) in porn history—Jeff Stryker, Al Parker, Ryan Idol, and John Holmes—as well as dozens of other men, and a few women too.

A bright, multi-talented star in his own right, Dior (aka Karen Dior, Geoff Gann, and Rick Van) has starred in and directed more than 200 bisexual, trans and gay videos. While his career spans mainstream cinema and TV faves (Veronica's Closet and Xena: Warrior Princess), he has made the greatest impact on transsexual porn since Sulka, and was the youngest director inducted into the Adult Video Hall of Fame.

Some say porn isn't lifelike, but that depends on whose life we're talking about. Dior's lurid tell-all details his dalliances in roughly chronological order, as he sleeps with (and "under") porn stars "off set," while acting alongside them and directing them in his videos. This interlacing of life and work makes for an extraordinarily voyeuristic read, as Dior escorts us from one sleazy frolic to the next. In an especially memorable chapter, Joey Stefano whisks Dior off to Palm Springs:

We… went out to the pool. Nick [aka Joey Stefano] was singing "The Candyman" and feeding me a hit of ecstasy every hour… People were sort of in awe of us. Our fame was just beginning to take off… We were being treated as sexual royalty, something that was new for both of us at the time… We kept bringing people back into the [hotel] room both separately and together…. The hotel room had sliding glass doors that opened out onto the pool area, so we started fooling around with the curtains open, the lights on and the door halfway open... some [guys] would occasionally be brave enough to come into the room and join us. (36-7)

An incorrigible romantic, Dior falls in love with half the porn stars he fucks. The poolside orgy follows on the heels of this nasty, tender scene:

I leaned over [Nick] and slid my dick into him… while we kissed for what seemed like forever… We were deeply in love, at least for those moments… He kept staring into my eyes and started crying when he shot onto his stomach. Then he ate all his cum. He always did that on film because he did it in real life. He loved cum. I shot my load up his ass into a condom. He pulled it off my dick as soon as I pulled out of his ass and he sucked the cum out of it before I could stop him. It wasn't the safest sex, but it was the sexiest thing I ever saw. I kissed him and he shared our cum with me. (35-6)

Dior's writing often sounds like a porn video—and, in a sense, reading his memoir is like watching one x-rated flick after another. It almost seems as if Dior lived his life in imitation of porn—a perverse twist on the idea that life should imitate art.

Yet, while Dior narrates plenty of hot scenes, his stories don't all end with the proverbial "cum shot" or "money shot." The chapter above ends with Nick's heroin overdose, and Dior—one of porn's staunchest HIV-activists—never shrinks from reminding us of HIV's toll on the entertainment industry: "I never get used to people dying; it just doesn't seem right… It keeps happening, though." (18) In the introduction, he says he is committed to telling the truth as well as titillating us:

By the time I entered the porn industry, condoms for fucking were becoming standard in gay videos…. There were a few times that were not safe, and I was tempted to skip those, just as I was tempted to never mention my former drug problem, but I decided long ago that I wanted to tell the truth. I am HIV-positive now because I did drugs and had sex without condoms sometimes, and I don't want this to happen to anyone else. My intention is not to eroticize the drug use or the unsafe sex, but to tell the whole story. Apart from those issues, this book is meant to titillate and entertain you. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed living it! (4-5)

Dior's passion for his life and work makes Sleeping Under the Stars a hot one-handed read.
