Highlights from the world of sex. Here's one of those items where, when you hear about it, you can't believe that any other standard ever existed. But, unfortunately, sometimes the rule of law takes its sweet time catching up with common sense standards for human behavior. California's Supreme Court ruled last week that a woman can change her mind during the act of sex and discontinue consent, and if penetration continues, this act can be defined as rape. ![]() This statute has remained shrouded in uncertainty for 18 years, despite its obvious insensitivity. But with its unanimous decision to overturn the 1985 decision, California's current Supreme Court has brought the state out of the dark ages. "A withdrawal of consent effectively nullifies any earlier consent and subjects the male to forcible rape charges if he persists in what has become nonconsensual intercourse," Justice Ming Chin wrote for the majority. Women's advocacy groups had been nervously anticipating the court's decision, as the issue cuts to the core of a woman's autonomy over her own body. Liverpool wing-back's mum in soccer sex scandal I dunno whose face is wearing the egg in this little trifle… maybe everyone. The mother of Liverpool wing-back John Arne Riise is currently embroiled in something of a sex scandal. Not for something she did, but for something she didn't do, which was sleep with a coach who could have helped her other son's fledgling football career. Riise's mum, Beret, a registered FIFA agent, was apparently trying to broker a deal to transfer her son, Bjorn Helge, to Cardiff City when his current team, Aalesund, suddenly demanded 115,000 pounds to release him from his contract. ![]() She accused Aalesund of "trying to ruin my boy's career with a vendetta against him and everyone in my family." But Nordmark was neither contrite nor very impressed with Beret's accusation. Firing back in the local press, Nordmark deadpanned, "She should be so lucky." Ouch. Sodom, Gomorrah, and Calgary?! Officials in Calgary, Canada are being warned that homosexuals will be forced to bugger in the streets if a recently busted bathhouse doesn't re-open, and pronto. Leaders of Calgary's apparently aggressively gay community say a police raid has forced sex between gay men from the confines of a bathhouse out into the streets and in public view. ![]() As Cornholio once said, "Are you threatening me?" Besides the imminent threat of public sex among gays, which would surely threaten the very social fabric upon which the Calgary community rests, Stephen Lock, host and producer of CJSW's Speak Sebastian, a show aimed at Calgary's gay community, was quick to point out their significance to ensuring public health through safer sex. "Safer sex information can be more easily disseminated (at a bathhouse) and there's certain peer pressure to practise safe sex," said Lock. This whole story, I guess, speaks a lot to the liberal nature of the Calgary police, I guess, and that's great. Could you imagine if similar language was used in the communities of, say, Philadelphia or Los Angeles? Man, if you think closing a bathhouse puts a cramp in your sexual activity, you should consider the effect of the hard, wet thwack of a baton on the skull… go Canucks!
