Erotica and Romance Collide
By Cara Bruce
New genre is a steamy success.

When Hearts Collide

by Marilyn Jaye Lewis
Magic Carpet Books
255 pgs, $9.95

I've never been a big fan of romance novels, and I've never even heard of an "erotic romance" novel, but I've always been a huge fan of Marilyn Jaye Lewis. I'll read anything she writes, no matter the genre. Lewis not only reaffirmed my belief in her talent, but has given me a new appreciation for the romance novel, to be more accurate, the erotic romance genre. Her latest novel When Hearts Collide is a sexy, well-written, highly entertaining piece of writing. So good that I read it in one sitting and then went back to re-read my favorite parts, something I only do with my favorite books.

When Hearts Collide tells the story of Dorianne Constance, successful journalist of Babylon Magazine (think E! meets People) and Evan Crane, superstar actor known as "the sexiest man alive." The two first meet when Dorianne does her first major story about Evan, then virtually unknown, helping propel him to blockbuster fame. Dorianne landed the story due to her affair with married Playboy Kent Cryer, at the time Editor of Babylon and Dorriane's first real love and lover. Fast forward a decade, Dorianne, beautiful, respected, and successful reunites with Kent, only to find out he's still lying and running around on her. Perfectly timed, she's asked by Evan to help him write his biography. A ploy thought up by his manager, this will be a chance for Evan to tell his "real story," setting straight the tabloid's version of his loves and his life. Sparks fly immediately when Evan and Dory meet again. The two could be any real-life Hollywood couple, facing the same relationship odds: interfering ex-lovers, trigger happy paparazzi and tabloids that print anything to sell papers. Is it possible for any real relationship to develop in a world that's created by smoke, mirrors and good lighting?

The story is surprisingly believable, and the characters deep, likeable and intriguing. Lewis not only manages to tell a great story, but one overflowing with hot sex scenes. Writing good sex is harder than it may sound, and writing a great novel is close to impossible, yet Lewis does both amazingly well. When Hearts Collide is sure to be a hit. If anyone can make this new genre of erotic romance a steaming success, it will definitely be Marilyn Jaye Lewis.
