New York Featured Event

Latex and rubber - generally used more for household appliances than for apparel and haute couture, but if you're in the market for some truly exquisite curve-hugging latex and rubber fashions, the Baroness has all the right stuff. www.baroness.com

Going only by her moniker of "the Baroness", this self-made success felt she was born to pursue a life of fashion. As legend goes, at the age of ten she borrowed a sewing machine and, in one afternoon, made a jacket and a too-tight skirt. At the age of 13, already brimming with innovative ideas, she was arrested for making American flag shirts, on which she had painstakingly painted the stars and stripes.

After a stint at designing lingerie in the 70's and 80s, she moved on to form a company named Varx, who produced a unique line inspired by Neo 60's, punk, and Victorian fashions. Her designs and inspired use of fabrics earned her recognition as creator of "wearable works of art." In 1983, for the cover of Time magazine she built a kimono that now hangs in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC.

The Baroness was involved in film and stage work for a while, providing elegance and creativity to the entertainment world with her unique stylings, but a fateful decision to leave the film world and spend more time in New York City meant more time for her new passion, latex.

If the clothes are what really make a woman - then these distinctive fashions are sure to be what every woman needs to reach that inner dominatrix or playful sex-kitten. From downtown boardroom business to nighttime monkey business, covering yourself in anything from the Baroness' line is sure to vamp up your wardrobe.

Claiming she makes clothing for people who really like to dress, the Baroness' "elegant and provocative latex fashions" span the gap from sophisticated and formal to daring and casual. The women's line includes staples such as form-hugging pants in a number of styles, several types of corsets, dresses in classic and fetish sorts, shiny capes, glossy skirts, and so much more

And her exotic creations are not merely for women - she has a slick latex wardrobe for men as well, with a line of jackets, shirts, tank tops, shorts, pants and more. She also offers custom-made articles and will work with her clients to form their fantasy items. Also included in her collection are some specific fetish items - sucky beds (this vacuum powered bag hugs every inch of your helpless body while you breathe through a tube), body bags, wicked-looking inflatable straight jackets, and hoods.

The Baroness stands apart from other latex designers because of her use of color. Her provocative latex fashions are currently available in eight different choices: Emerald Green, Ruby Red, Onyx Black, Sapphire Blue, Amethyst Purple, Ivory White, Hot pink, and Pewter.

Her creations can be seen in fetish and trend-setting stores in New York and cities nationwide. The majority of her sales, however, are through her lavish and exquisitely photographed online catalogue on her website.

But it seems it's not enough to merely dress the thousands who purchase her wares - the Baroness is also the hostess at several fetish events in the NYC area. The most recent is her Royal Amusements V, scheduled for September 5. Heralded as "the most extravagant gala of elegance, decadence, and fetish splendor in the world," this reason to dress to excess will be held at Capitale, on Grand St. between Bowery & Elizabeth.

As one might guess from the name and the hostess's involvement, this fashion retinue will have a no-exceptions dress code: fetish, fantasy, or formal attire including latex (of course), leather, chain mail, cyber punk, cross dressing, fantasy creations, period costumes, or tuxedo, tails, or ball gowns. Slated occurrences for the evening include fashion shows, sexy latex go-go girls, bizarre rubber play, an appearance by Mr. Rugman, the human Doormat, and a dungeon (courtesy of Arena Productions).

And the Baroness has an incentive for those who may not have the appropriate wardrobe but are ready for their premier into the world of rubber and latex - all tickets to Royal Amusements V come with a 20 percent discount on any Baroness latex.

If you aren't able to make it on September 5th, never fear - the Baroness has yet another fantasy event scheduled for September 7th with her monthly Fetish Retinue held at the Alphabet Lounge 7th St. & Ave. C, where the doors open 8:00 pm and performances begin at 10:00. The theme for this month's event is "Glamour & Pain" and promises to carry on in the tradition which helped it win the "Best Sex in NYC" award three times from Time Out in NY.

"A safe place to do dangerous things," is how the Baroness herself describes the Fetish Retinue's proceedings. One reviewer points out "It's not the most extreme scene in town, but it is a frisky get together for folks who like to bend an elbow as well as their gender assignments. For the price of an Absolute and cranberry you can mix with some latex-and-leather-clad locals who are eager to sleaze, pose for a photo or two, and if you're not careful, maybe turn the table, or paddle, on you."

So whether you are a newbie or hard-core fetishist, gear up, strap in, slither down, and if you happen to be wearing one of the Baroness' delicious designs, so much the better. Perhaps the lady herself will deign to notice you.
