As California and Massachusetts are well on their way to legalizing gay marriage, the rest of the country seems to be throwing a temper tantrum over it. Senators are calling for a Defense of Marriage Act to be put into place, the President is talking about adding a definition of marriage (as the union of a man and a woman) to the Constitution and every day more and more idiotic news headlines such as "Marriage Amendment is Needed to Preserve Civilization" pop up.

Gee, it's a wonder we ever got this far in civilization, that we're not still living in caves and dragging women around Flintstones-style without that marriage amendment.

Mormons are rallying against it, while Arizona's gay marriage ban is being challenged in the Court of Appeals. The battle over gay marriage rights has become center stage. After the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on the Texas sodomy case the closet doors literally blew wide open. Just in time for elections, a fact that California Governor Gray Davis is well aware of as he faces the recall election next month.

But, like many people who aren't directly affected by this (i.e. not gay), I'm sitting here wondering the big question: Why can't the government stay out of people's personal lives and let people live the way they want? Just because you're in office (elected or not really) does not give you the right to play god.

That is not at all the same as this question: Who cares? Or even worse: Why would gay people want to get married? Currently, gay couples are denied all of the rights of marriage, including inheritance or the ability to make legal and medical decisions for a partner who is incapacitated.

Could you imagine spending your entire life with the person you love and then not being able to make a major decision such as a medical one?

The excuse that the anti-gay marriage people are using is this: we must protect the children and procreation. Some of the most loving parents I know are gay. How is the gay marriage ban going to protect those children that are currently in gay households? And why would allowing gay marriage have anything to do with straight couples continuing to procreate? I don't think that has ever been cited as a cause for concern over the continuation of the species.

It's not enough to just sit back and mind our own business. We’re talking about real people with real lives. For just a minute, put yourself in the position of part of a same sex couple and really think how you would feel. I think the major problem is that many people don't see gay people as real people. In fact, some people can't even see them at all.
