Stripping Gets Commercial!

What? Wait! Hasn't it always been? Well, certainly, public strip clubs are the pinnacle of capitalism, where a few eyelash flutters and a flash of skin can cost a ten-spot. But have things finally gone too far?

Naked NY's Donna Barnes and Bob Berkowitz
Over the past year, striptease lessons have moved from the stripclubs, where, one can only assume, ladies once learned more or less on the job, to mainstream venues. Crunch Fitness offers aerobic striptease classes, encouraging their members to shed pounds along with their clothing. A mother and daughter team featured on MetroTV's Naked NY showed off their classroom style and explained how it empowers women, helping them to own their sexuality. A cottage industry of their Tupperware party-type strip classes has popped up in suburbias all across America, turning the most straight-laced soccer moms into boa-stroking sirens.

Pamela Anderson's animated series Stripperella is practically ready for Nickelodeon and HBO's G-String Divas shows the stripper lifestyle up close and personal. So now everyone's getting into the bump and grind and you're a social misfit if you don't know how to "work the pole."

Well, the French department store Galeries Lafayette is taking this one step further. Or should it be one shake-and-shimmy further? Trumpeting what they're calling "the world's largest underwear section," they will be offering their female shoppers free striptease lessons. It's difficult to believe no one is the kink-crazy USA has come up with this ingenious marketing tool!

Every Saturday, ladies perusing the silk teddies and push-up bras might be escorted to a private area, where Striptease teacher Lea will show them what they can do with their purchases. That is, aside from the obvious. "These classes are for women who want to play seducer, to spice up their relationship or to surprise their partner, but who don't know how to do it," Lea said.

Explaining why learning to artfully remove their underclothes can benefit the average woman, the store's website explains, "A professional demonstration lets you discover the gestures it takes to unveil your pretty underwear." And no doubt it will help women justify those enormous charge card bills to their husbands! How could a man complain about $100 worth of underwear when it was all purchased with THEIR pleasure in mind? The web site adds "Classes are for women only" but we know that's bound to change once Queer Eye for the Straight Guy gets word!

Kudos to the French for finding such a fabulous way to move merchandise AND derrieres!
