PARTY IN THE STREETS Sydney throws an enormous outdoor bash on New Year's Eve with fireworks over the harbor. There's a countdown practice run at 9:00 pm for families, with the main event at midnight. If you haven't booked a hotel room in the city center and you don't have a friend who lives in the thick of the action, there are a number of options for serious partygoers: A cruise or an island jaunt both offer unique views of the action. Hire a water taxi to either get you to your destination or get you close-up view of the fireworks. Sydney Harbour's tiny islands offer a great alternative to a cruise. The most expensive option is to fly over the action, but it comes with a great deal of risk as well as a hefty price tag. A more comfortable and affordable option is to book a table at one one of Sydney's high rise restaurants. The Roads and Traffic Authority offers a limited number of tickets to view the fireworks from the dress circle position of the Cahill Expressway deck above Circular Quay. The emphasis is on family fun, so no alcohol or glass is allowed, but the venue offers a unique view of the event. Or just watch all the action on a wide-screen TV from the comfort of one of Sydney's many pubs and bars. Keep in mind that although the fireworks end around 12:15, the party goes on until dawn.

Studio Coast hosts NYC house icon Danny Tenaglia. With a 2,000-capacity, it should be a NYC-size bash. Liquid Room's bash at Ebisu Garden Hall follows its tradition of presenting Japan's hottest new DJs with those set to man the decks including hip-hop/electro DJ Krush, Toshio Matsuura of UFO, and tribal house producer Kaoru Inoue. Live acts will include the jazz-inflected techno of Max Tundra from the UK and Japan's keyboardist wunderkind Rei Harakam. Shibuya's Womb will be the place to be for techno fans with two DJs Sven Vath and Richie Hawtin dueling through an all-night, 12-hour set.

Brussels' La Demence boys will be rocking at Belgium's Fuse right through to dawn. The organizers exhort men - and only men - to celebrate the dawn of the new year in Belgium's "biggest playground for real men." Celebrating 10 years of La Demence in Brussels, as well the first birthday of GUS magazine, 2002 is sure to kick off in spectacular fashion if it is to live up to the previous year's craze-filled blast.
