Photographer Brad Rickerby is well known for his travel and stock photography, but he indulges his "darker" side in naturally set BDSM pieces. He spoke with us about his processes and desires.

Eros Zine: Where do you live?

Brad Rickerby: Through a variety of strange circumstances, I don't really live anywhere. I travel most of the time now although I do have family and a mailing address in a village near Boston. I'm spending a lot of time in Asia these days and pass through NYC and LA often.

EZ: How did you begin shooting photography?

BR: My father was a rather famous photographer and I grew up with a camera in my hand. I was first published at the age of 7 in LIFE magazine. In the 60's that was big stuff!

EZ: It still is! You shoot a lot of beautiful BDSM pieces. How did you get involved in this world and in shooting it?

I am fascinated by the intimacy and trust inherent in complete surrender.
BR: My shooting of BDSM material is an outgrowth of my personal involvement in and fascination with it. I find helplessness and surrender to be very, err, exciting (intellectually and physically) from both the dominant and submissive perspective. I am fascinated by the intimacy and trust inherent in complete surrender. I find that remarkably deep levels of fulfillment can result in intimacy and trust. Try just giving yourself up to someone and see what a profound experience it is. Really. Conversely, having power over someone who is helpless by choice is a real rush in itself.

When I left my wife 5ish years ago I found nothing in the world of BDSM imagery that really turned me on. I was a newly free man and visual artist so I started creating images that I found personally arousing! It's really that simple.

EZ: You shoot a lot of voyeuristic series. Do you think of photography itself as a form of voyeurism?

BR: No. To elaborate - I don't think of photography as a form of voyeurism. I suppose that argument has merit, I just never think of it that way.

EZ: Is there a particular mood or attitude you try to convey?

BR: I try to convey helplessness and ultimately, the surrender of my subjects. I also attempt to portray a sense of realism in the mood of my images. I don't use artificial light or elaborate costumes. I prefer natural settings. Few people, myself included, have a dungeon readily available - but we all have bedrooms, kitchens, garages and motels. Outdoor BDSM can also be very, well, exciting, and I enjoy toying with available light.

I try very hard to make my work artistic. I have shot porn - yeeech! I've also spent a lot of time trying to defend the work you are seeing as being art rather than porn. To me the distinction is obvious and I've stopped trying to defend my work.

EZ: To us as well! Your portfolio includes extensive cityscapes, and your work has been featured on the cover of Time and in Life Magazine, Maxim, Playboy etc. How do you feel about shooting for magazines? How does the experience differ from your personal photo shoots?

My inspiration is found in my fantasies and in my sex drive - therefore, it is nearly limitless.
BR: Magazine photography used to be the world to me. These days I'm doing a lot more creative travel for advertising and stock work. This work pays a lot better, lets me be creative and choose what I want to shoot and keeps me moving around the world.

My erotic photography is different. I love shooting it, and would love to spend much much more time shooting it. It is very personal and fulfilling. It is work that makes me think about myself as a person, how I relate to other people and the ways that people relate with each other. I would shoot much more of it were the production costs not so high. Find me a way to cut costs and/or increase revenues and I'll be shooting a lot more of it. A universal plea, right?

EZ: Where do you find inspiration?

BR: My inspiration is found in my fantasies and in my sex drive - therefore, it is nearly limitless. For the record, I want to note that I treat the photographic shoot strictly as a professional process. While the inspiration may be personal, the process of turning that inspiration into an image is professional.

EZ: Where do you find your models? How well do you know them?

BR: My models come mostly (not exclusively by any means) from on-line modeling sites. I am always looking for new models and particularly those who have a personal interest in the world of BDSM (from either the dominant or submissive side). Models involved in the world on a personal basis photograph more real.

Any interested models should feel free to !

EZ: Any dark desires you care to share?

BR: A word on "dark desires". I have had MANY! But as I have grow creatively, emotionally and spiritually, I have stopped considering them dark.
