Teagan Presley: Photo spread and interview with one of Digital Playground's hottest starlets. More»

Last month a restaurant in southwest China was fined for offering to serve sushi on the nearly-naked bodies of women. In 2003, a Seattle restaurant outraged local women's groups by providing four pieces of sushi with the purchase of a drink, also served off a woman's body-in this case one clad in a thong, flower pasties and lots of plastic wrap.

The practice, which began in Japan, has spread to Los Angeles, New York and, no doubt other bastions of edgy entertainment. It involves sushi placed on clear plastic wrap over the torso of a model wearing little more than a thong and a few strategically placed flower petals.

Naked Sushi has been presented as art and as an elegant gustatory experience. It "occurs" in restaurants, nightclubs and galleries. Variations on this theme, such as women covered in fresh fruit or expensive chocolates, have also been presented in similar circumstances.

IS it art? Is it further objectification of women? Or is it merely a crass marketing ploy, designed to bring bodies in the door?

Though there isn't much historical discourse on the topic, one can assume that its genesis in Japan was an artistic one. The Japanese combine food and art seamlessly; each dining experience is more than just a meal served up on a steaming cafeteria tray. It is an all-encompassing sensual experience. Sushi is itself an art. So presenting the tiny works of art on such an obvious masterpiece as a woman's body makes complete sense. That is has become a spectacle and a novelty is a reflection of today's sex-negative morés.

Surprisingly, the adventure of eating any food off a woman's naked body is an interest shared by many men. One particular gentleman describes his ideal evening as one where his lover is naked, prone and decorated with sushi. The shallow valley of her belly button holds a salty pool of soy sauce. He gently plucks each piece of raw fish from her body, dunks it and serves both himself and his lover. They savor the meal together before making love, the sticky, salty soy sauce mingling with their sweat.

You can certainly understand the fascination!

The deeper meaning can perhaps be construed as woman nurturing man - and woman. As infants, we all feed at our mother's breast. Perhaps the act of coming to a woman's body to have one's hunger satiated is based somewhere deep in our subconsious. Woman = gratification.

Would YOU consider allowing a lover to pluck sushi from your naked body, as described above? Would you participate in a public serving of food from your body? Take our informal poll.
