New York Featured Event

Summer weekends are a vast wasteland in Manhattan. Everyone with enough dosh makes a dash for the exits and heads to the beaches or mountains. Why sweat away your weekend in your postage-stamp-sized apartment? Well, to hit Motherfucker, of course!

The cast and crew of Motherfucker have been doing their thing now for just over four years. In fact, they celebrated their anniversary with a huge shebang this past Memorial Day weekend at Spirit. Offering "upbeat music for downtown kids," this bash is a pansexual mélange of models, Williamsburg punk rock boys, fashion-forward femmes fatales and those who admire and aspire to all of the above.

The party was born in the waning days of Mother (the legendary Meatpacking District nightclub-cum-clubhouse) debuting in May 2000, a mere month before the club closed. Since then, the party has grown, metastasized and traveled from one venue to another, terrifying the public in the process. Motherfucker only happens on holiday weekends, usually on the Sunday before a three-day weekend, but they do the occasional Friday, as well as the annual Wednesday night Thanksgiving Eve.

The brains - and egos - behind this extravaglamza are varied. There's long-time scenester and current "promotional director" of the spanking new Delancey, Georgie Seville; TisWas co-hostess and downtown doyenne DJ Justine D.; East Village tavern proprietor Johnny T.; and Manhattan's last androgen, Michael T. The original "hostess" with the leastest was Michael "Misstress Formika" of Wigstock and foul-mouthed MC fame, but this one has been a bit pissy about getting into drag as of late, so other local celebs have stepped in as necessary. Chi Chi Valenti, mother of Mother, emceed the big anniversary bash, and tattooed catwalk queen Theo, formerly of The Lunachicks and currently curating Kitten Klub at Plaid, will be working the mic on the next big night.

The party has been held in The Meatpacking District and midtown, gay Chelsea and the staid Penn Station neighborhood, taking up temporary residence in every large venue in the city, from the vampire haven Downtime to old school roller disco the Roxy. But regardless of where they drag the regulars, there's always a line down the block, presided over imperiously by Thomas and Zach, who will give you the once-over to decide if you're properly attired. The "Dress up, motherfuckers" dress code is not strictly enforced, with the possible exceptions of Halloween, New Year's Eve or their anniversaries. Anyone in thrift store chic can get past these fashion queens. The reasons for the occasional tough door policy are a combination of higher haute couture expectations and heavier traffic on their big nights.

Regardless of where the party happens, though, they really pack the hipsters in, shoulder to sweaty shoulder. Motherfucker exceeded the capacity of Heaven a few summers ago and blew out the club's power, sending sweaty revelers into the streets. Of course, the hardcore partiers stayed inside braving the bright emergency lights and were rewarded with a jump on the interminable lines for booze. Everyone wound up drenched, but it was definitely a night to remember. They also filled Spirit to capacity for their anniversary bash, which is impressive, given the club's expansive 2000 capacity.

This July Fourth weekend, you can celebrate your freedom to fuck on the dance floor with their Fourth of July Freak Out. Your guest hostess is the lovely aforementioned Theo. Jonathan Calouette will be filming "Mona Lisa," Jesse Malin's new music video, so even if they won't be enforcing the dress code, you'll want to look your retro-rock glamorrific fiercest. Michael T. and Justine D. tag team on the main dance floor as usual, spinning "communist rock, Nazi new wave, propaganda punk and gay GOP disco" while in the makeout lounge, DJs JDH and Dave P. spin "born again post punk, mellow industrial, electro hymns and cocaine sex jams."

The usual Toni & Tina Cosmetics giveaways lure the ladies-and the boys who wear eyeliner. Promosexual Ron M. makes sure there's just the right blend of freaks and wannabes, straights and not-sos, city kids and bridge-and-tunnelers. And Zach must be out in the Hamptons, because door bitch Thomas will be joined by Connie Girl to make sure you're working a look. They suggest some coutures: Ronald Reagan from all periods, boozy Betty Ford, "edgy" matron looks, ie. two-inch pumps and a wool skirt. Honey, I ain't wearin' no wool skirt in July! Well, you get the picture. Don't miss it, motherfucker!
