Teen Nudist Camp?

In Richmond, Virginia, The ACLU recently challenged a state law that bans nude summer camps for teens. The camp in question is a no-clothing camp for juveniles that was scheduled to take place in late July at the nudist White Tail Park in Ivor, Virginia.

According to the American Association of Nude Recreation, White Tail's week-long retreat for 11 to 18-year-olds is one of three nudist camps for juveniles in the country and the first in Virginia. The law that was passed in March as a response to last year's June teen retreat.

The plaintiffs in the case include White Tail itself, plus three couples who are White Tail members and their families: two girls, ages 10 and 12, and three boys, ages 11, 15 and 17. "These are parents who have raised their kids in a nudist lifestyle, and they - the parents and the kids - view nudity as something natural and ordinary as opposed to something erotic or sexual," said Rebecca Glenberg, the lead attorney. "So for these kids, being around other naked kids is something perfectly normal, and the camp is very highly supervised," she said. We ain't gonna touch this one with a ten foot tent pole. Buh-dump-bump!

Fuck, Rock, Roll and Save the Rainforest

July's Quart music festival in Oslo had a stark naked agenda this year. First, the activist group Fuck for Forest offered an onstage demonstration of how to save the rainforest. During The Cumshots rock performance, a couple was called on stage by the lead singer to strip and screw for almost 10 minutes, to the delight of over 4,000 cheering fans. The couple, members of Norway and Sweden's environmentalist and idealist FFF group, was fined 10 000 kroner each, along with the five members of the band.

Across camp, Korean artist Shu Lea Cheang had set up a sex tent with the intention of filming couples having intercourse for the National Touring Exhibition. Staale Stenslie, the head of the NFE, defended the art, saying "It's about humanity, nakedness and intimacy. Shu Lea is a very serious and respected artist." The organizers of Quart thought otherwise, shutting the tent down, claiming violation of decency laws.

Having sex in public is illegal in Norway and carries a maximum sentence of a year in prison. It seems like a small price to pay to save the rainforests though.

Running of the Nudes Not So Naked

On Monday, July 5, PETA organized the third annual "Running of the Nudes" in Pamplona, Spain, a protest run against the brutality of the Running of the Bulls, Pamplona's legendary street insanity, and bullfighting in general.

The first "Running of the Nudes," in 2002, saw only 25 mostly naked activists, but in 2003 that number swelled to 150 and this year increased to 200 participants from 15 countries, some in their underwear and some topless, but none nude, due to their inability to secure the necessary permit.

Though the protest is against cruelty to bulls, it is human beings who often suffer at this annual event, with 13 people killed since 1910. Of course, being gored when nude might offer a whole new kick for thrill seekers.

Record-Setting Nudity

Nude "art photographer" Spencer Tunick set a record in June for the most naked people in one photo, shooting 2,750 people. They were posed lying on their sides at a park along Lake Erie behind the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on June 28, early in the morning, when Cleveland's summer temperatures had barely reached 50 degrees.

Climbing down from the 40-foot scissor lift that enabled him to capture the wide-angle shot, Tunick said, "That's the best picture I've ever taken." We haven't seen it yet, but we can bet it will be virtually indistinguishable from the dozens of others he's shot. You can gauge for yourself: a print of the photo will be on display at Cleveland's Museum of Contemporary Art from August 6th till the 8th.

The Orgy Boat?

One hundred British and Scandinavian tourists participating in a wild orgy on an excursion cruise ship off the island of Cyprus were discovered by undercover police. The scenes were also broadcast on TV, which begs the question of just how obscene they were. "These scenes are not just graphic, they go beyond every conceivable limit," the island's deputy chief of police, Sotiris Haralambous, said. So evidently they were pretty raunchy, but not too risqué for local TV, which aired the photos and tapes in "edited form."

Because it appeared that drugs had been consumed, authorities with the Greek Cypriot government said they will be making arrests. However, the good captain knew enough to take the boat out into international waters, so the police will have to request arrest warrants from Interpol. Now that sounds like a perfect use for tax dollars. Hey, do the Greeks pay taxes? Well, remind us to take our cruise ship a bit further out into international waters the next time we try to live out our orgiastic fantasies of The Love Boat!
