New York Featured Event

Hot town, summer in the city? Hot yes, but not necessarily a hot town. Summer is the slowest season for nightlife, though don't let the bridge and tunnel crowd know. While they come streaming in to take advantage of the city's new cavernous clubs, the residents are either out of town or in hiding, waiting for things to kick back in come fall. They take refuge in neighborhood bars and rarely venture into nightclubs.

So what better time to start a new event? There's virtually no competition and everyone's hungry for something fresh and different. In a fresh and different space.

Xris, producer of SMack! (the long-running "premiere multimedia fetish play party") and eletrofetishist Oticon join forces with Marke (of Viagra and the Miss Fetish NYC Pageant), DJ Lucien, and the team of Clea Cutthroat and Dark Jane (who were responsible for Scratch at Meow Mix). Together, the five conspired to create BYTE, which they're positioning as "Synthetic. Sexy." In a sea of rock clubs and DJs spinning what could be Rhino records compilations, this is a welcome addition to NYC nightlife.

Xris started SMack! eight years ago, melding music, fetish and his audiovisual skills to produce what was eventually termed cyberfetish and popularized by Click + Drag and kinky European clubs. Lately, the city's fetish nightlife scene has dwindled to one weekly event that more closely resembles a high school goth club, and most of the more serious kinksters have retreated to private play parties and dungeon events.

So what's on the bill for their big opening night? Audio excitement will be provided by DJs Lucien, RAF, Sensorburn and Die J! Mars. They'll be spinning a mélange of synthpop, electro, electroclash, EBM, goth, darkwave and industrial. Visual amusement will feature decor by Adrienne Dowd and D'Drennan and video works by SMack! Video Lab. Performance art method go-go will be dished up by Miss Cherry Pitz, Alligator Boy and "The Byte Gurlz." Led by Clea Cutthroat and Dark Jane, it's sure to keep the audience entranced. Also i, synthesist will perform live synthesized electropop with a technological spin.

The promoters promise a "semi-interactive dungeon," and we can only guess what that means! There will also be oodles of cheap drink specials reminiscent of the OLD Lower East Side that won't economically tax the cybercreative types in attendance. Striving for something "harder and edgier" than what's currently available, the producers plan to take a fresh look at the party every month, not only with new themes, but through different musical styles as well.

The venue is The Delancey Lounge, a brand new space in an out-of-the way spot at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge. Open for only a few weeks, it has already received glowing reviews in The New York Times Style Section and hosted hipster events for Fader Magazine, among others. With a moodily-lit lounge upstairs overlooking bumper-to-bumper bridge traffic, projected video and a strategically-placed DJ booth, it feels like an unlikely melding of swanky nightspot and dark dive bar. The basement is a sweatier, grittier space that often features local rock bands and closer quarters. But the big draw over the summer has been their rooftop deck, where nicotine addicts can indulge their habit while turtles swim in a marshy pond.

The five-promoter team acknowledges additional presence and support from Father Vincent of the flawless vampyre realness at numerous events' doors, Georgie Seville of Motherfucker fame, Gil T. Pleasure (co-producer of Glorya Wholesome's events), Lower East Side goth and fetish emporium Machine, WSIA, Rockstar Energy Drink, The Domain, The Durty Girls, NYCIndustrial.net and CyndiFreeman.net. Together they request that scenesters "support the scenes" so that there are more of these parties in the future. Sounds like spectacular idea to us!
