Normally, if one were to hear that they're going to be introduced to Trigger, they think of Roy Rogers' valiant steed. When they meet Trigger, The Human Equine, however, they're often a little confused. They wouldn't be alone in that confusion: there are many different lifestyle choices in the world and they are as varied and diverse as the whole of society. One of the least understood lifestyles is that of "Pony Play."

Pony Play is a form of fetishism and a more complex a topic than one might first imagine. Luckily, we found Trigger to aid us in understanding what Pony Play is all about. When asked to define the term Pony Play, Trigger (who goes by no other name) gave us a more concise answer than we are likely to find in research materials or on the Internet. He simply said, "Pony Play is basically where a human takes on the role of an animal of the equine family. This is usually a horse or pony, but may also include donkeys, mules, etc…" He proudly stated that he realized he was a pony in the late 70s. "But I really didn't find my pony persona and pony space until the mid-90s."

Trigger's website (www.thehumanequine.com) expounds more on the idea of play, adding: "It is different for each player but the basic is where one (person) takes on the role of a pony. Sometimes it is just the one person, like playing dress up, dreaming of the peacefulness of fields. Other times there may be more participants."

All this seems pretty straightforward until one adds the one crucial ingredient guaranteed to stir up controversy: sex. Pony Play is known as a form of sexual fetishism, and trying to define the word fetishism would take a whole different article. Who knows - we may get there one day!

When asked the exhaustive question of whether Pony Play is spiritual, sexual, a kink, a lifestyle, or a form of self-identification, Trigger showed the grace of a stallion standing proudly in a field, agreeing with all the sub categories. "I think every individual has various aspects of spiritual feelings and beliefs."

When asked about the sexual nature of the play, he was equally honest in responding, "There is eroticism in it for me, and on occasion I may have an erection while being a horse, but it's more of a natural response of excitement, much like a dog sometimes gets when it's happy to see you. It's not sexual to me. For others, it is very sexual. There are some couples that use Pony Play as a form of foreplay to enhance their sexual life. Is it a kink? For my particular desire in being thought of (completely as) a horse, I don't see it as being as kinky as other things I enjoy, so for me, I would say no, it's not kinky."

He continued with a fascinating insight into the deeper world of fetishism. "There are some who enjoy doing Pony Play and being treated like a horse; a Submissive (may be) made to be like a horse. Some (do it) for the power exchange, some for a humiliation aspect, others for the pride of being it for their Dominant. These areas I would consider kinky; of course, kinky is in the eye of the beholder."

But Trigger truly believes in his soul that he is a horse, a pony, as evidenced by his response to the self-identification question. "Self-identification - for me, I can identify with being a horse. I've been told and also feel that I have a horse soul. That somewhere in me there lives a horse. Is it a lifestyle? Not for everyone, but it's a big part of my life and I spend a lot of time doing and thinking about it so, for me, yes, it's a lifestyle."

When delving deeper into the world of fetishes, kinks and fixations, we often find that Pony Play is falls in the arena of BDSM. This brings its own set of headaches to deal with, as this area itself is a realm of controversy and contention. When Trigger is asked specifically about fetishism and BDSM, he answers in a forthright manner. "Yes and no; for some it can be a fetish, for others it may not even be a BDSM mindset. I know several ponies (that) have no interest in any BDSM activities, but they love doing Pony Play or role-play as a pony."

That having been said, Trigger was quick to let us know that Pony Play does not really fall into the categories of dominance and submission for him. "Although I do consider myself submissive, horses and human ponies are not always submissive. They have a mind of their own and personalities, and they do pretty much anything (that a normal pony would do). Is the rider or trainer dominant? Not always but (they are) usually in control of the animal." He gives a short laugh and adds slyly, "Although sometimes an animal can control the human."

I followed up, asking if this might be something he only identifies with when he gears up or puts on his "tack." He answered casually, saying, "I think I identify with it (the lifestyle) all the time; however; the pony head space doesn't usually come to me until I'm in gear and tacked up, usually after a rider has taken control and treated me as a horse. This is usually with her riding me, but sometimes it's just the way she takes possession and control of me and if I feel she sees me as her horse." With all his pointed emphasis, it becomes apparent that Trigger feels it important and necessary he be seen and treated as the animal he feels he is.

Join up with us in our next edition for part 2, when we meet with Trigger again to learn more about Pony Play and how The Human Equine lives his life as a sweet pony.
