It may be hard work (ahem), but they seem just the pair for it. For 22 years, Doctors William Hartman and Marilyn Fithian have toiled away at the Center for Marital and Sexual Studies in Long Beach. They've been faithfully recording orgasmic response in their laboratory and hit upon the idea of hooking subjects up to blood-pressure and heart-rate monitors and various sensors in the vagina or anus. After this fun, the overworked docs sit by the beside and scribble away results as the subjects scrabble away on beds. When asked if they're simply voyeurs, they demur, claiming this type of research is inconceivably boring and that they had to "struggle to stay awake." Bravely, they overcame the boredom to spend 10,000 hours in the lab. The study eventually covered 751 individuals. The results were fascinating: the most orgasms they recorded in an hour for a woman is an astounding 134. The poor males withered in comparison with a paltry 16. ![]() Write this off as just another example of disparity between the sexes. The typical male orgasm lasts anywhere from 3 to 8 seconds, though its possible through deep breathing and regular exercising to extend it to maybe 10 seconds or so. Ask Sting for precise numbers. As you probably are aware, women are capable of multiple orgasms without having to rest in between. (I love my life.) Just ask the all-knowing Cecil Adams, author of More of the Straight Dope; according to him, women are capable of sustained orgasm, called status orgasmus. These wonderful events start with a 2-4 second "spastic contraction" and last twenty to sixty seconds. In 1966, Masters & Johnson published the chart of one woman who experienced a marvelous 43-second orgasm, made up of at least 25 successive contractions. Oh, honey... The Fastest Orgasm ![]() Pfft. As if any woman will tell you coming that fast is a good thing. But on the other end of the spectrum, Wardell B. Pomeroy, author of Dr. Kinsey & The Institute for Sex Research, tells the tale of one lucky lady who had an incredible sexual response. His words: "I remember one woman who was capable of fifteen to twenty orgasms in twenty minutes. Even the most casual contact could arouse a sexual response in her. Observing her both in masturbation and in sexual intercourse, we found that in intercourse her first orgasm occurred within two to five seconds after entry." Gives you a goal, now, doesn't it?
