Marla Rutherford, Erotic Gallery: Strong, seductive beings in a surreal world. More»
11-16-2004

Earlier this year, I was drooling over a Masuimi Max photo shoot I had come across. She had two incredible-looking women with her, dressed alike so it would appear they were twins. Then I realized, hell, they are twins, and gorgeous, at that. I quickly found out who these sirens were: The Porcelain TwinZ.

Later this year, I went to the Gentleman's Club Expo in Las Vegas, where I had the opportunity to see the Porcelain TwinZ perform one of their trademark dance routines. Can I just tell you about the steam these two generated in the audience? Your author is no exception, as I found myself standing there agape, entirely missing the conversation I was supposedly engaged in.

In a quirky twist of fate, the TwinZ, known as Zero and Zen, were generous with their time and answered a few questions for you, our Zine audience. After hearing their responses, I admit I am as enthralled with this engaging duo as I was at first glance.

Eros Zine: I understand that you got into the dancing scene after some college athletics injuries sidelined you both. Was dancing a natural medium and had you had training before?

Porcelain TwinZ: Dancing was a natural medium for us, and we caught on quickly how to move like strippers. After a few months of dancing, people often thought we had been dancing for years. We had never had any formal training, but we had always been passionate about dancing even as small children. It started at an early age with us dancing in our underwear.

EZ: Was the initial idea for you to get into the scene as individual dancers, or was it always the plan to dance together?

PT: Dancing was never a plan. We never plotted to become exotic dancers, and somehow turn it into a career. That was beyond any of our conceptions. We just got into it to make a little money, and it actually took a couple of years before we realized that we did have something unique and different.

When we began dancing in Portland Oregon, one of us started a month before the other because one of us was living in California. We really had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. We had always done everything together, so it was only natural that we would dance together as well.

EZ: You say that what you're doing is not about being sexual with one another, but instead that you are pushing boundaries and taboos within an artistic medium. Has this caused problems for you in the past, with those boundaries being just a little too much for some folks? Does it ever bother you, or have you trained yourself to see it completely as an artistic expression, so there are no "squicky" moments"?

PT: The boundaries we cross are a bit over the edge for many folks. We have had to sacrifice a lot of mainstream work because of what we do. Once the cat is out of the bag, it's all over for us. We have a lot of artistic integrity as well, and we are at a point in our career where we do not have to compromise our own vision for someone else's.

EZ: Was one of the reasons you adopted new names (Zero and Zen) due to the avant-garde nature of your work?

PT: Yes, correct.

EZ: Who does all the choreography for the dance/performance art routines and which routine is your favorite?

PT: We choreograph all of our performance art pieces or dance routines. We come up with a theme, which is usually inspired by the music, and it develops from there. It is a very intense process.

Our current favorite piece is our Asian Military Fan Show. We are working on a new piece right now, though, so it might change. This piece is our favorite because it is our most elaborate piece to date. There is so much depth to it. We were very inspired by one of our favorite artists, Marilyn Manson.

EZ: You've moved into movie conceptualization, and there's a movie clip on your site. Have you done more, and do you have future plans you can share with us? Have you ever been approached by the big production houses?

PT: We have an erotic art film on our site titled, The Masked Charade. This is a film that we wrote, directed, produced, cast, star in and compiled a soundtrack to. It's shot on 35mm film and is set entirely to music, all by local Portland bands. We have been unable to find distribution to our film because it's only thirty minutes long. We learned this lesson the hard way. However we do plan to distribute it in the future.

We would like to shoot more erotic art films; however, it is very expensive. We are currently seeking funding for another erotic art film taht we have already conceptualized. If you know anyone with some cash, send them our way!

We would also like to venture into feature filmmaking. We just finished writing our autobiography and will hopefully be releasing it early next year. We are in the process of seeking publication, and once published we hope to turn it into a feature film.

EZ: You're also singers, and your debut album is due to be released soon. Can you tell us the release date? Can you explain your style to us, and give us a hint of what we can expect with the album?

PT: Yes we are singers. As for the record, we have not recorded it yet because we have not found the right producer to work with. We have a very clear vision of what we want our record to sound like; therefore, finding the right producer has proven to be quite a challenge for us.

The record will be very avant-garde and the lyrics we wrote are very dark and from the depths of our souls. Our style will be very unique. We don't want to give away too much though, but think trip hop acid jazz with a carnival twist.

EZ: Yum, can't wait to hear it. You're still in Portland, and proudly so. There seems to be a thriving underground art culture there, which seems to have enabled you to expand your horizons. What were the most influential things that have helped you become the powerhouse duo you're so well known as?

PT: Dante's Sunday Sinferno Cabaret! This has given us an outlet to perform our unconventional erotic stage shows to an audience who thrives on more, more, more. This is where we shot our erotic art film and it has also enabled us to bring documentary crews in from LA to shoot us there. One documentary crew was Playboy TV's Sexcetera, which will be airing next year.

EZ: I'll be looking out for that one. Fetish seems to be a natural genre for you to operate in. Do you feel any connection to the fetish scene, or is it something that reached out to embrace you, with the tinge of kink your art inspires?

PT: We fell into the fetish scene early on in our dancing career, and it influenced us, inspired us and is the backdrop for all of our shows. It definitely reached out and embraced us, so it came naturally to us.

EZ: What is your trademark lipstick?

PT: MAC RED lipstick and Prestige True Red water proof liner color.

EZ: Your site is fantastic. I understand one of you handles the site while the other handles finances. How did the split come about? Is one of you a guru with web stuff, and the other with math? Does handling the site mean everything, or mild maintenance with a web designer to do the background changes?

PT: We actually share both of those duties now. We work on the site together and we work on the finances as well, although one may do a little more in one field than the other. Overall we run all aspects of our business together.

In regards to handling the site, we have created the blue prints for it and have our webby perform updates, maintenance, or any really technical stuff. We are more of the art directors and writers, overseeing any changes that we want made. We sometimes drive our webby nuts with the maintenance we want done, but overall the updates are simple. It's when we have a wild hair to redesign the entire site that we really drive him crazy.

EZ: I noticed you have a nude gallery on your site. What is in there?

PT: Our nude gallery is the membership area that people can join. It is full of artistic erotic nude photographs. We shoot with photographers all over the world. We always provide our own costumes, coming up with the overall art direction of most of our shoots. We do our own hair and makeup, and it flows like water when we begin to shoot. We like to do lots of posing, so it is always good to shoot with photographers who let us be as bizarre and extreme as we want to be.

Also in the nude gallery we have a movie theater with live performances of our shows and other erotic video clips, a diary, performance art gallery with photos from all of our live shows, a guest gallery with other hot models, and goodies that you wouldn't find on the free side of the site. We literally have thousands of photos in the nude gallery.

After spending a few hours examining their site and checking out the extensive free galleries as well as the membership ones, I can say that this is a journey through the mirror images of sensuality. Their artistic expression jumps out at you, only to soothingly caress you back into a relaxed, yet roused state before moving on to the next wonderful creation. Personally, I intend on re-visiting this site again and again, just to keep my eye on what these stage sirens have dreamt and will dream up next. I highly recommend www.porcelaintwinz.com for a lengthy perusal for fans of art, seduction, sex, kink, fetish, expression, and fantasy.

Long live the TwinZ!
