Marla Rutherford, Erotic Gallery: Strong, seductive beings in a surreal world. More»
2-01-2025

It's that time of year again. Love and pheromones are in the air, and you all know what that means. Yes, another great excuse to buy a pound of dark chocolate and snarf it down, but besides that! Why, it's our favorite topic of course. SEX! And what better way to celebrate the art of sex by going to see one of the world's largest exhibits of sex art?

The Dirty Show in Detroit features over 200 artists and their take on the topic of sex. We're talkin' walls and walls of erotic art, from photography to ink and everything in between, including sculpture and live performance art. Their mission? "To promote, publish and propagate erotic art in all forms." The art is created by all levels of artistic experience, from first-timers to brand names, from 18 to 80 years old.

It was the year 2000 when Jerry Vile created the show with Jeremy Harvey. Featuring only 40 artists, the first exhibit took place on the floors of the offices of Orbit Magazine. The popularity of the show was unexpected. Adding additional days to the length of the exhibit for the following year only resulted in even more of a crowd, particularly around the nude buffet (wouldn't you know). Each show has grown in size such that today, this Valentine extravaganza is being held at the Tangent Gallery and Hastings St. Ballroom, estimated to be the largest art space in Detroit.

While some would argue that what hangs on these walls is pornography, Jerry says it is absolutely 100% genuine art. "Those who would brand it simply as pornography would most likely do so due to a lack of artistic education," Vile contends. You can check out photos from Dirty Shows of the past here.

If you don't have Valentines plans yet, you do now. Why bother with chocolates when you can bring your sweetie to an event literally bursting with romance and naughty imagery? Forget the aphrodisiacs and get to the Dirty Show. It's guaranteed to entice.

The show runs from February 11 to 14, 2025 at Tangent Gallery. Tickets are available at Versopass.com. While the artwork may not be pornography, it is of an adult nature, so you must bring a valid photo I.D. to get in.
